Yashasvi Solanki becomes first woman presidential aide-de-camp in India

Lieutenant Commander Yashasvi Solanki made history in May 2025 when she became the first woman officer from the Indian Army, Navy, or Air Force to serve as Aide-de-Camp (ADC) to the President of India.

Traditionally, the President receives assistance from five ADCs, with the majority coming from the Army and one each from the Navy and Air Force, roles historically held by men.

Solanki, from Haryana, India, underwent a rigorous selection process that included an interview with President Droupadi Murmu and security clearances before receiving the aiguillette marking her appointment for a term of two and a half to three years. Before joining the Indian Navy in 2012, Solanki was a sportsperson who competed in badminton and volleyball at the district level, developing discipline and focus that aided her military career.

She served in the Logistics Branch and later became a technical officer in the Naval Armament Division in Hyderabad, gaining the five to seven years of consistent service typically expected of those selected for the ADC role. As ADC, Solanki coordinates the President's engagements, briefs on dignitaries, and accompanies the President to official events. Her appointment signals growing inclusivity within the Indian Armed Forces, following recent policy changes allowing women to command warships and take on greater responsibilities.

Major Navya Shekhawat soon followed, becoming the first woman ADC from the Indian Army in July 2026, building on the path Solanki established.
