Germany installs over three million smart meters

Germany now has more than three million smart meters installed, according to data from the Bundesnetzagentur, the country’s federal network agency.

As of June 30, smart meters were present at 5.9 percent of all metering points, a 1.5 percentage point increase since the end of 2025. German law requires electricity customers who use more than 6000 kilowatt hours annually to install smart meters.

Lawmakers initially aimed for 20 percent of these customers to have the systems by the end of 2025, but the country exceeded that goal, reaching 23.3 percent. Currently, 26.1 percent of legally required installations have smart meters. The Bundesnetzagentur initiated proceedings against 434 companies that failed to meet installation quotas in March, finding that 77 had installed no smart meters at all. However, the agency has since closed 150 of those cases.

Agency head Klaus Müller stated that the start of oversight proceedings is driving progress with the rollout, and he emphasized the need for continued acceleration to improve system efficiency. The increased use of smart meters will help integrate wind and solar power into the grid by better matching consumption to available supply.
