Former Deputy Governor advocates for inclusive education in Nigeria

In Lagos, Nigeria, former Deputy Governor Princess Sarah Sosan called on schools and communities to fully include children with disabilities in education and society.

Sosan spoke at the fifth anniversary celebration of Place of Liberty School for Special Needs Children, where she highlighted the progress students have made in acquiring vocational skills and earning income.

She urged both public and private institutions to create inclusive classrooms and equip teachers to support students with disabilities, emphasizing that no contribution to these programs is too small. Sosan expressed concern that some families hide children with disabilities due to societal stigma, and encouraged parents to instead support their children’s development. She shared the story of Toma Onu, a former student who has overcome challenges and is now thriving, as an example of what is possible with support.

The school itself provides free education and therapy, and board member Soji Oluwole noted that students previously unable to walk or speak are now making significant progress. Place of Liberty also runs a vocational program to prepare students for independence after leaving the school, with some former pupils already working part-time at the institution.
