Women farmers advance food security through agroecology in Senegal

In Niaguis, a town in the Casamance region of Senegal, leaders, technicians, and animators from ten West African countries gathered for the fifth International Camp for Peasant Agroecology Training (CIFAP).

The Pan-African movement “Nous sommes la solution” organized the event as a space for sharing knowledge and building capacity around food sovereignty. Mariama Sonko, president of the movement, explained that agroecology is a comprehensive and interconnected practice.

This year’s CIFAP focused on livestock farming after previous sessions covered land revitalization, biofertilizers, vegetable seeds, and bioprotectants. Sonko emphasized the importance of passing on traditional farming practices to new generations, noting that raising poultry is a central role for women and guarantees healthy, affordable food. Facing high meat prices and health risks from imported chickens, Sonko advocated for a return to local breeds better suited to community needs.

Tabara Ndiaye, regional coordinator for agroecology funds in Africa, praised CIFAP for building movements and highlighted the role of the Agroecology Fund in connecting donors with local organizations to support communities’ food sovereignty. She stated that producing locally for local consumption is key to sustainable food systems, especially with women and young people taking ownership.

Idy Gomel Ba, assistant to the sub-prefect of Niaguis, encouraged participants to become ambassadors for a sovereign and prosperous Africa, sharing their new knowledge upon returning home. Organizers view peasant agroecology not as a simple alternative, but as a solution for the future, with Niaguis serving as a symbol of Africa’s agroecological transition.
