Widow welcomes husband’s remains home after nearly 50 years

In Hà Tĩnh province, Vietnam, Chu Thị Miện, age 72, recently received the remains of her husband, Phan Hồng Viêm, nearly 48 years after he died in battle.

Phan Hồng Viêm was born in 1949 and joined the army in 1968, eventually becoming a Đại đội trưởng (battalion commander) in the 113th Special Forces Regiment.

He briefly met his wife after enlisting and they married, but he returned to duty and never met their son, Phan Hoàng Hùng, born in 1978. Viêm died in June 1978 during fighting to protect the southwestern border near Ba Chúc in An Giang province, at the age of 31. Miện raised their son alone, working as a farmer and fish vendor to support the family and build a small home.

For years, she searched for her husband’s remains, eventually locating his grave in An Giang province with the help of authorities and former comrades. Though she visited the grave five times, she lacked the means to bring his remains home until recently. On September 5th, Miện welcomed her husband's remains back to their hometown, expressing relief that she would finally have “someone to keep her company.” A memorial and burial took place on September 7th.

Miện’s brother-in-law, Phan Hồng Huệ, noted that another brother also died in combat, and the family still hopes to locate his remains.
