Peruvian conservationists protect critically endangered crocodiles

In northern Peru, 321 Tumbes crocodiles, a critically endangered species, are finding refuge at the Tuna Carranza Aquaculture Center.

Illegal hunting and habitat loss previously brought the crocodiles to the brink of extinction. Flavio Saldarriaga, who leads the center, part of the National Fisheries Development Fund (Fondepes), notes that agricultural and aquaculture expansion has further reduced the crocodiles’ habitat. Currently, the center separates male and female crocodiles because it has reached its capacity, preventing further breeding.

Pollution and food scarcity also threaten the species.
