Malaysian schoolmates reunite after 50 years

In Malaysia, members of the La Salle School Class of 1976 gathered at La Salle Hall to celebrate a reunion, marking 50 years since they were in Form Three.

The former students, some travelling from overseas, came together to renew friendships forged in their teenage years and to remember shared experiences through careers, family life, and personal hardships.

The group chose September 16 for their reunion because of the Malaysia Day public holiday and its connection to memories of singing the national anthem during school assemblies. La Salle Brickfields only offered education through Form Three, after which the students continued their studies at other schools like Catholic High School and Sultan Abdul Samad. Of the original 200-plus students in the classes of 1976, 23 have died, making each reunion more meaningful for those who remain.

Organisers noted that many classmates now face challenges with affordability and health. Despite this, the group hopes to continue meeting for as long as possible, valuing the sense of belonging and camaraderie they share. Beyond socialising, the alumni maintain a tradition of service through a fund called “Brother for Brother,” providing support to former classmates in need and continuing the Lasallian spirit of helping the vulnerable.

They also fondly remember the teachers, including missionary brothers, who instilled in them values of commitment and discipline, contributing to their later successes.
