Family seeks answers in Malawi cricket coach’s murder

Prema Menon of Australia learned her brother, Arjun Menon, a Singaporean cricket coach working in Malawi, had been killed at his home in Blantyre in May 2023 when his wife contacted her during a family outing.

Arjun Menon, 48, was also the head of cricket operations for Cricket Malawi. His family has struggled to get information from Malawian authorities despite repeated requests for updates on the investigation into his death, with no arrests made to date. Ms.

Menon travelled to Malawi after the murder to attempt to understand what happened, learning only that her brother’s car and wallet were stolen and that he had not expressed any fear for his safety. The family entrusted communication with the Malawi police to the president of Cricket Malawi, but received little new information beyond the statement that the investigation continued.

The family also contacted Singapore’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs for assistance, but Singapore does not have a diplomatic presence in Malawi, limiting the support they could provide. While the Singapore Police Force offered to assist if requested by Malawian authorities, no such request arrived as of August 31. Ms. Menon used social media to document her search for answers and raise awareness, hoping to improve systems for families facing similar situations when a loved one dies overseas.

Friends and colleagues in Singapore recently hosted a charity event in his honour, raising over S$13,000 for a Malawian orphanage and a cultural centre in Singapore.
