Fishermen rescue elephant calf in India

Fishermen in northeastern India saved a newborn elephant calf after strong currents separated it from its mother in the Teesta River.

Ajay Das, Rajesh Das, Gopal Das, Mittu Das, and Bishwanath Das saw the calf struggling and pulled it from the water near the Teesta Barrage. They brought the animal to a river island while forest personnel from the Baikunthapur Forest Division searched for the mother. The calf’s cries helped the team locate its mother after almost two hours.

Rescuers then reunited the pair in the Gajoldoba area of the Teesta River. Locals celebrated the rescue as an act of compassion and a contribution to wildlife conservation in the region.
