Law graduate celebrates success with former coworkers

José Israel Hernández Chávez, a 21-year-old from Matamoros, Tamaulipas, Mexico, recently graduated with a law degree after working as a garbage collector to finance his education.

For five years, Hernández Chávez balanced his studies at the University of Matamoros with a demanding job collecting trash for the local public cleaning department. He began his days at 6 a.m., often working until late at night, and persevered through difficult weather conditions to attend classes and fulfill his work responsibilities.

Hernández Chávez chose to celebrate his graduation in a unique way, posing in his cap and gown on the garbage truck that funded his education. He wanted to publicly acknowledge the effort that allowed him to pay for each semester of his law degree. After the graduation ceremony, he immediately went to the municipal waste depot, where he celebrated with his coworkers, parents, sisters, and girlfriend.

Hernández Chávez shared photos of the celebration on Facebook, expressing gratitude to God and his family and friends. He hopes his story will inspire other students facing financial hardship. Despite achieving his degree, he continued to work as a garbage collector, demonstrating a commitment to the job that sustained him through his studies. He plans to practice law while maintaining the same discipline he showed as a student and worker.
