Song for a legend: Peruvian football star receives gift from artist with autism

In Lima, Peru, Jessica Gamarra traveled from Miami with her son, Matthew, to surprise Teófilo Cubillas, a famed Peruvian footballer, with a song and a custom-made jersey.

Jessica, a singer-songwriter and activist who advocates for autism awareness, befriended Cubillas after he helped her family rebuild their home following a fire. She composed a song titled “El Nene del Perú” dedicated to him, and Matthew designed and painted a unique jersey as a gift.

Jessica orchestrated a surprise presentation at the Alianza Lima football stadium, Matute, where she sang the song as Cubillas was presented with the jersey. Matthew, who was diagnosed with autism at 18 months old, has developed into an accomplished artist, exhibiting his work in Europe and Peru. Jessica believes his artistic talent and perseverance demonstrate that anything is possible with love and dedication. The gesture deeply moved Cubillas, who wore the jersey proudly around the stadium.

Jessica, originally a fan of a different football club, found herself drawn to Alianza Lima through this experience. She plans to continue using her music and art to promote inclusion and has already begun writing songs for other Peruvian football figures and Alianza Lima’s supporters. Cubillas expressed his gratitude, saying he was surprised and touched by the unexpected show of affection.
