HEAL Data Platform accelerates addiction research

Researchers have created a cloud-based system to unite data from the National Institutes of Health’s Helping to End Addiction Long-term (HEAL) Initiative.

The HEAL Data Platform, built on the open-source Gen3 platform, functions as a central hub for finding and analyzing information related to addiction studies. It connects to nineteen existing data repositories and commons, offering access to shared datasets through standardized metadata and secure computing environments.

The platform currently indexes over one thousand studies funded by the HEAL Initiative and supports hundreds of users each month. This mesh architecture allows scientists to more easily locate and reuse data previously spread across multiple sources, speeding up the pace of discovery. By making data Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reusable, known as FAIR principles, the HEAL Data Platform aims to increase the impact of research funded through the initiative and ultimately improve understanding of addiction.
