Daughter becomes caregiver as mother battles cancer

In early 2025, a woman in the United States learned her mother had cancer after a hysterectomy, and she immediately stepped in as her sole caregiver.

The author received the initial diagnosis over the phone while her mother was still in surgery and then had to deliver the news herself. After further testing, doctors determined her mother had Stage 3 adenocarcinoma, a rare form of uterine cancer.

While caring for her mother, the daughter experienced significant physical and emotional strain, including fatigue, back pain, and eventually a diagnosis of osteoporosis and Hashimoto's thyroiditis, an autoimmune condition. The daughter realized she also needed care and support, and her mother encouraged her to prioritize her own health. They shifted their dynamic to focus on their mother-daughter relationship, finding strength in everyday activities like watching television and cooking together.

More than a year after the initial diagnosis, the mother continues to fight Stage 4 cancer, and the daughter remains dedicated to supporting her while also managing her own health.
