Greek police target crime in Roma settlements

Police teams in Greece have been implementing an operational plan in settlements with high crime rates, largely inhabited by Roma communities across the country for nearly a year.

The Hellenic Police (ELAS) are evaluating the program’s initial results, aiming to correct any shortcomings and improve effectiveness. Officers report the primary goal, preventing crime and ensuring the safety of all residents without targeting any specific group, has been met.

The Prevention and Mediation Groups (OPDI) began operating in November 2025 to strengthen policing and prevent crime in areas with Roma settlements. They also work to foster cooperation between local communities and authorities, increasing feelings of safety. The creation of these groups responds to requests from citizens living near the settlements who seek social peace, order, and security for their families. Police have observed a shift in criminal activity as a result of their increased presence.

While overall crime has decreased in many settlements, particularly in areas like drug trafficking and burglary, down 23% in 2025 compared to 2023, fraud has increased by 51%. Criminal groups are also relocating outside of the settlements to avoid constant police monitoring. Positive results have been reported in areas of Attica like Vlichos Megaron, Agia Varvara, and Koropi, as well as in cities across Northern Greece.

From November 8, 2025, to August 15, 2026, police checked 231,140 people nationwide, arresting 3,329, including 686 minors. The Deputy Mayor of Megara stated that police operations have improved the situation by 70-80%.
