Kenya imposes fines for illegal solar energy sales

The Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (Epra) in Kenya will fine homes and businesses that illegally send extra electricity from their solar power systems into the national grid.

Epra introduced a “dumping surcharge” through new regulations. These rules allow consumers to supply excess solar power to Kenya Power, but they also penalize those who bypass official procedures and directly feed electricity into the grid. The regulations aim to safeguard Kenya Power’s distribution network.
