Colorado overpass cuts animal-vehicle collisions by 91%

In Colorado, United States, construction of a large wildlife overpass and underpasses along Interstate 25 reduced animal-vehicle collisions by 91%. The project, completed last December, cost $15 million and includes a 209-foot-long, 200-foot-wide bridge allowing animals to cross the highway safely.

The structure addresses a long-standing barrier to seasonal animal migration.

Chuck Attardo, environmental manager for the Colorado Department of Transportation, stated that reducing these collisions saves lives for both people and animals, avoids property damage, and lowers costs for public services and traffic delays.
