UK government expands efforts to reduce knife crime

The UK government is expanding its crackdown on knife crime to over 230 areas in England and Wales, following a nearly 24% reduction in knife robberies across seven police forces since June 2024.

The Home Secretary, Shabana Mahmood, is supporting locally developed plans combining increased police patrols and preventative programs for young people at risk. These plans will also focus on improving public spaces to discourage hiding weapons.

Growing evidence suggests that concentrating resources on small, targeted areas is the most effective way to lower knife crime rates. The government reports that overall knife crime has decreased by 11% since it took office, with a goal to halve it within the next decade. Mahmood recently visited the West Midlands to observe funding being used in one of the affected regions. Community advocates who have experienced loss due to knife crime are supporting the government’s approach.

Pooja Kanda, founder of Justice for Ronan Kanda, emphasized the importance of both enforcement and prevention, stating that “behind every statistic is a family and community that has been changed forever.” Other campaigners highlighted the need for trauma-informed approaches and long-term investment in community organizations that support vulnerable young people. The government intends to continue working with these groups to address the root causes of knife crime and provide alternatives to violence.
