Mark van Bommel: family man behind the coach

Mark van Bommel grew up in Maasbracht, Netherlands, the son of a beverage wholesaler, and always prioritized football despite forgoing a typical youth.

John van Bommel, his father, wanted a less physically demanding job for his son than the one he had delivering drinks, carrying heavy cases daily.

As a young player signing with PSV, Van Bommel introduced television presenter Harry Vermeegen to his family and their beverage business, resulting in a comical incident where Vermeegen accidentally crashed a forklift into stacks of beer. Van Bommel’s dedication to football meant sacrificing social life as a teenager, a choice his parents understood as he pursued a professional career.

While playing for Fortuna Sittard, he met Andra, the daughter of his coach Bert van Marwijk, after a party arranged by an assistant coach. Their first date was a simple meal at McDonald’s, a detail that became a running joke with teammates. The couple later married and had three children, moving across Europe to support Van Bommel’s career with clubs like Barcelona and Bayern Munich.

Throughout his career and after retiring as a player, Van Bommel remained close to his family and friends. He supported his children’s athletic pursuits, with sons Thomas and Ruben becoming professional footballers and daughter Renée competing in tennis and later working in media. He also faced personal loss, mourning the deaths of friends and family members like former teammate Fernando Ricksen and agent Mino Raiola.

In 2026, Van Bommel began a new role as the coach of the Belgian national team. His father continues to meticulously document his son’s and grandchildren’s careers, maintaining a dedicated museum in their former beverage warehouse.
