Workers in Vilnius, Lithuania finished the second stage of major repairs on Trakų Street. The project focused on a section of the street between Pranciškonų and Kėdainių Streets, replacing old water and sewage pipes dating back to the early 20th century. Crews also installed a new stormwater drainage system and restored the street’s granite pavement.
Trakų Street is important for both residents and visitors to the Old Town, as it houses critical water supply and wastewater infrastructure for the city.
The condition of the underground networks had become critical, with some pipes over a century old. Vilnius City Mayor Valdas Benkunskas stated the repairs are an important investment in the city’s future, aiming to create a smooth and comfortable environment for residents and visitors. During the second phase of reconstruction, workers restored 2,232 square meters of granite paving, widened sidewalks, and laid 353 meters of new stormwater drainage. These improvements will make walking easier and improve rainwater runoff.
Before restoring the street surface, crews replaced the water pipes, increasing their capacity, and repaired a section of historical sewer lines. Saulius Savickas, general director of Vilniaus Vandenys, said the renewed infrastructure will ensure reliable water supply and wastewater management in the heart of the capital. Traffic has returned to normal on the renewed section of Trakų Street, and the final stage of reconstruction, covering the remaining 50 meters, is planned to begin in the second quarter of 2027.
Vilniaus Vandenys will rebuild about 755 meters of water pipes and 180 meters of sewage pipes across the three phases of work.
