New wildcat species discovered in Bolivian Andes

Researchers recently identified a new cat species, Leopardus tilcayo, in the Yungas region of the Bolivian Andes.

This is the first new cat species discovered in over a century. Local people call the cat Tilcayo, and scientists adopted this name to acknowledge its cultural importance to the region. The elusive wildcat belongs to the tiger cat family. Scientists published their findings in Current Biology.
