Largest iron find from la tène period unearthed in Austria

Archaeologists in Deinham, Austria, discovered approximately 500 iron bars while working at a gravel pit.

The iron, weighing one tonne in total, dates back to the Iron Age and La Tène period, between 300 and 100 BC. Peter Trebsche of the University of Innsbruck, the lead author of a report in Antiquity, stated the find represents the largest of its kind in Europe. The discovery provides new insights into metalworking during that era.

Experts called the find “a stroke of luck for archaeology.”
